Fasting and Keto: The Ultimate Power Couple

In part one, I shared foundational info about fasting and keto and how they work on a cellular level. Now let’s talk about why you should consider combining these two together.

Since keto and fasting have been shown individually to promote longevity with anti-aging benefits, you get amplified results when combined into one protocol! Fasting and keto combined make a power couple for longevity and anti-aging.

(Hint: If you are wondering about the how-to’s for either of these, don’t worry – we’ve made it easy on you with our keto meal plan and longevity fast.)

So let’s dive into why these two diets…or lifestyles… complement each other beautifully.

How do fasting and keto work together?

I’ll let you in on the biggest secret in the nutrition and wellness world: there’s no one perfect diet for everyone. What works for me might not work for you. Or, what worked for you for a few months may stop working after a while. That’s because the body learns to adapt. But if you can think of keto, fasting, or any other nutrition programs as tools to be used together along your health journey, you’ll be that much more successful.

Think of the word synergy, defined as two actions or substances that work together to produce a greater effect than they do separately. This is how fasting and keto work. Both promote ketosis and autophagy but also can increase efficiency as you cycle between the two. When combined intentionally, they become even more effective at supporting your health than either method on its own.

As I mentioned in part one, fasting can make it easier to jump into ketosis more quickly. Usually, it can take some time for you to get into ketosis. But when you fast, you are already in a state where your body relies on fat (stored in your body) for energy instead of fuel from your food. So when you jump from fasting to keto, you are already primed to burn more fat.

Keto and fasting are part of your wellness toolbox

While keto and fasting are fantastic tools for health, they aren’t the end-all answer for everyone. As I said, every one of us has different backgrounds that make us unique. Keto can be a long-term solution for some people. For others, staying too long on the ketogenic diet or spending too much time fasting can create added stress on the body.

In fact, these diets work because they force your body into periods of adaptive stress where the body is forced to think outside of the box (like use fat instead of carbs for energy). But, just like a muscle, you can’t lift the same weight all the time and expect to grow stronger. Have you ever experienced a weight loss plateau? Weight seems to fall off initially, but suddenly you are stuck at the same weight for weeks on end? This is an example of the body adapting to the changes you’ve made.

For some, taking occasional breaks from keto or fasting can enhance your results even more. If we keep the body from getting overly stress or adapted, we can continue to reap the benefits. Cycling between periods of keto and fasting, with plans like our paleo or acid-kicking programs, keeps the body guessing.

Plus, rotating in plant-forward diets is a good way to ensure you’re getting the full spectrum of beneficial phytonutrients that add extra fiber and goodness to support your gut. Some research has suggested that long-term keto may not give our gut bacteria the prebiotic love it needs. Luckily our ketotarian, acid-kicking, or paleo meal plans have you covered with extra plant-forward goodness on top of gorgeous, healthy fats. So you can have weeks where you swap them in too!

The takeaway: keto & fasting are fabulous wellness tools. Use them individually or together. Tack on intermittent cycles of our other programs to optimize the effects and bring more variety into your life. The trick is to find which plan matches your lifestyle.

Think about what works for you – is it regular fasting with keto? Maybe it’s a quarterly reset using our longevity fast mixed with our other meal plans.

No matter what you choose, utilizing the power of keto and fasting as wellness tools can help you see optimal results without feeling deprived.
